$1 BILLION ALLOCATED TO IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION AND EXPAND STATE’S ECONOMY

Stockton, CA – Continuing the push to rebuild California’s infrastructure and spur job growth, the California Transportation Commission (CTC) today allocated $1 billion to 107 transportation projects statewide, including $838 million from Proposition 1B, a transportation bond approved by voters in 2006. The remaining allocations came from assorted state and federal transportation accounts.

“From one end of the state to the other, transportation projects are providing jobs and improving mobility for people and businesses in California,” said Caltrans Director Cindy McKim.

Since its passage, $ 6.8 billion in Proposition 1B funding has been allocated by Caltrans and the CTC. Highlights of today’s funding allocations include:

• The North I-5 Stockton Widening with HOV Lanes project, which will pave the median, replace the deck on 15 structures, add four miles of auxiliary lane, add sound walls, and construct 24 lane-miles of high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes. These will be the first HOV lanes in San Joaquin County. The project will also rehabilitate existing lanes between Country Club and Hammer Lane.

• Stage II of the East Sonora Bypass project on State Route 108 in Tuolumne County, which will reduce local traffic congestion in East Sonora and save a total of 644 daily vehicle hours by constructing a new expressway.

• The State Route 59/Cooper Avenue Signalization project in Merced, which will widen State Route 59, construct a new “T” intersection with Cooper Avenue, and signalize the new intersection.

• The Modesto Ramp Rehabilitation project on State Route 99 in Stanislaus County, which will repair failed pavement areas and grind and repave existing pavement to improve road quality.

• Two projects on State Route 99, the South Stockton Widening and the Manteca 6-Lane, which will widen the roadway from four to six lanes, provide 28 new lane-miles, construct frontage roads, and replace some overcrossings. The project will ease congestion, improve mobility, decrease commute times, and enhance safety for interregional and regional trips within and through San Joaquin County.
