Chain Installer Orientation and Permits

Stockton – Individuals interested in becoming a chain installer on California State Highways in the Sierra Nevadas can contact the Caltrans Maintenance Office at (209) 736-0187. Permits are available for State Highways 4, 88, 89, 108 and 207 in Calaveras, Alpine, Amador and Tuolumne Counties.

Due to new chain permit requirements, returning chain installers and anyone interested in becoming a new chain installer must attend the orientation class. The orientation will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. in the Caltrans Maintenance Office located at 98 South Main Street, Angels Camp, California. A written and performance exam will be held immediately following the orientation. Successful applicants may purchase their permits immediately thereafter.

The cost for the permit and identification bib is $200.00. Calaveras County requires a business license for all applicants for Highway 4. The Calaveras County Tax Collector’s Office is located in the Government Center in San Andreas, California.
